What it is
This flags moves that hang a pawn (or two) the opponent can simply take. Not a dramatic blunder, but a leak: material given away without compensation.
Why it matters
Pawns decide endgames. Players who reach even endgames a pawn down over and over are losing games they'd draw or win with cleaner play earlier. Free pawns are also tempo and initiative for the opponent.
How to recognize it
Watch pawns that advance past their defenders and pawns left behind when you push elsewhere. Before grabbing space, check the square you're vacating isn't leaving a pawn undefended.
