Why do I keep hanging pieces?

Leaving a knight or bishop where the opponent can just take it for free is the single most common way club players lose games.

What it is

A hanging piece is one that's attacked and not defended — or defended fewer times than it's attacked — so the opponent can win it for nothing. This theme flags the moves where you left a minor piece (or more) undefended and your opponent could simply capture it.

Why it matters

A dropped piece is worth about three pawns; at club level that's usually the whole game. Unlike a positional slip you can often recover from, a hung piece is concrete, immediate material your opponent didn't have to work for.

How to recognize it

Before every move, do a one-second check: is anything I own now attacked, and is it defended enough? Look especially at pieces you just moved and pieces near your opponent's last move — that's where hangs cluster.
