Why do I keep losing my queen or rook?

Dropping a major piece — a rook or the queen — is a game-ender, and it happens more often than most players think.

What it is

This flags moves that leave a rook or the queen where the opponent can win it, whether outright or for far less material in return. Major pieces are the ones a single blunder decides a game around.

Why it matters

A queen is worth nine pawns, a rook five. Hanging one against an opponent who notices is almost always resignable. The queen is also the piece players move most confidently and check least.

How to recognize it

Give the queen and rooks their own safety check every move — they range across the whole board, so a distant bishop or a discovered attack can hit them from far away. Watch for the opponent's move that suddenly attacks a major piece you'd stopped looking at.
