What it is
The exchange is the value gap between a rook and a minor piece. This flags moves where you gave a rook for a bishop or knight without enough compensation, usually because the rook was trapped or a fork forced the trade.
Why it matters
Two pawns of material is rarely losing on its own, but a habit of shedding the exchange means starting every endgame down material. It's the kind of small, repeated leak that a single-game review never surfaces but a cross-game view does.
How to recognize it
Keep rooks off squares a minor piece or pawn can attack — knights forking a rook and a second target are the classic culprit. If a trade wins you a rook for a minor, take it; if it loses you one, make sure the compensation is real.
